- Gaining PR Skills Through Internship Experience
Internships are more than just résumé boosters; they’re opportunities to translate classroom practices into real-world impact. As a Public Relations student at Florida A&M University, I’ve always been passionate about storytelling, minority representation, and ethical communication. This summer, my internship allowed me to grow personally and professionally. Here’s how: 1. Improving My Communication Skills In PR, the tone of what you’re saying is just as important as what you say. During my internship, I had the chance to: Draft social media content that matched brand tone Write blog posts with clarity and purpose Practice presenting campaign ideas to supervisors These moments taught me how to communicate strategically for diverse audiences, a skill every public relations professional must master. 2. Enhancing My Adaptability Unlike the classroom, internship environments can shift quickly. From unexpected client edits to changing deadlines, I learned to: Adjust my workflow under pressure Stay flexible without losing attention to detail Balance multiple projects with different teams This flexibility is crucial in PR, where things often move fast and stories evolve quicker. 3. Studying Professional Tools & Platforms My internship has taught me to rely on tools beyond Microsoft Word. I became familiar with: Canva for designing social graphics Spaces by WIX for team collaboration Media monitoring tools to track content performance These hands-on experiences gave me confidence in my technical skills and helped bridge the gap between academic courses and industry practices. My internship didn’t just give me assignments; it gave me insight, perspective, and professional growth. I feel more prepared to take on roles where my communication skills, adaptability, and passion for representation can shine. For students in PR and similar fields, internships aren’t just a stepping stone; they’re a launchpad.
- The Introduction of Laila Adair Revealed
Who am I? Hi! My name is Laila Adair, and I am a double major in theatre and economics at Spelman College with a passion for storytelling and analytics. At first glance, Theatre and economics may not seem like a natural fit. But to me, they are the two poles of my being: an artist and an analytical thinker. Theatre shapes my voice; economics grounds my ideas. Together, they've led me to a growing passion for marketing, a field where creativity and analysis blend. I have worked as a marketing intern at The CryoPlace, where I created online campaigns and an online tour that increased client engagement. I have also built campaign strategies, through class work, for the brand, Topicals, focusing on how companies can connect with Gen Z through authentic, varied storytelling. My love of global learning has shaped a great deal of who I am. Studying abroad in Spain and Rwanda opened up my world to two completely different cultures, languages and histories, teaching me the power of representation, which are perspectives that I can take with me into both my creative endeavors. As a Spelman on the Hill Fellow, I had the opportunity to see public policy and advocacy firsthand. I helped research and write a proposal for expanding eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for students in college and was also able to lobby on the Hill in Washington, D.C. It only made me more certain that storytelling isn't just for the stage; it's something with which we must work to effect policy change. In my free time, I enjoy crocheting, riding my bike, watching movies, and being involved with campus activities! Basically anything that can get me out of the house and keep me active. No matter the role, performing on stage, developing a campaign, or diving into economic research, I approach each with curiosity, creativity, and purpose. This introduction only reveals so much of me, so to see what I am up to daily, find me on Instagram at @laila.adair and LinkedIn at Laila Adair.
- Beyond the Resume: Skills from Internships to Carry into Any Job
Photo by Antoni Shkraba Studio Why internships? Internships are meant to help one gain experience in a field they want to work in. There are different kinds of internships. Some may be longer than others, and some may be paid. But, at the end of the day the goal is to gain skills. What kinds of skills should an internship help me gain? Skills to gain Communication: Many internships offer the opportunity to be paired with a mentor. As a WINtern, I am expected to stay up-to-date with my project deadlines and ensure that I attend our meetings frequently to understand the content. Finishing projects on time and communicating deadlines will be a top priority. Multitasking: Internships are a part of your day-to-day life. Therefore, it is important to maintain a healthy work-life balance that helps you grow each day. Taking time off by going on walks, reading, or playing video games helps me prepare to focus on assignments. Time Management: Building on the multitasking aspect, managing your time regarding the internship is crucial. Some projects may take a longer timeframe to complete; therefore, it is essential to allocate dedicated time to them. Sacrificing your personal life for work is unhealthy in the long run. Teamwork: Oftentimes, you will be paired with like-minded interns such as yourself. Therefore, collaborating with other interns and mentors will aid you in future endeavors in the professional world. My experience with my mentor has been excellent, and I am growing more each day I collaborate on ideas with her! Initiative: Putting yourself out there is the first step to receiving an internship. I remember being shy in the interview, but I knew I had to stand out. What matters is taking initiative with each project and going above and beyond! What I hope to gain from the WINternship With experience in SEO, I was interested in exploring other forms of digital marketing, such as email marketing. I want to gain copywriting skills to become a well-rounded digital marketer. So far, hands-on experience on projects provided to us has been valuable. Having a mentor to help me when I have questions is extremely helpful.
- Internships: The Ultimate Skill-building Experience
Internships are often talked about as a bridge between the office and the classroom, but they're not just that. A quality internship can set you up for important skills that go far beyond the parameters of academic knowledge or task-completion. No matter where you're interning, a startup, office building, or non-profit, the experience is a real opportunity to grow in ways that will directly impact your future career . One of the most valuable things that you take away from an internship is communication. You learn how to conduct professional conversations, how to assertively write emails, and how to present yourself in meetings. You also learn about time management as you balance deadlines, meetings, and sometimes even classes. Internships make you prioritize and be organized, skills that are required in every profession. Problem-solving and adaptability are also sharpened in the process. Real-world challenges rarely come with a step-by-step guide. Interns often learn by doing, making mistakes, and adjusting quickly, an invaluable trait in any industry. Another key lesson? Teamwork. Working in a group teaches you how to exchange ideas, accept criticism, and adapt to different work styles. You'll get a taste of professional protocol, too, like meeting manners, email communication, and office politics. Most significantly, perhaps, internships teach self-confidence. As you apply what you've learned to real-world situations and see your efforts make an impact, you begin to see yourself as a professional, a worker, not a student. So, while you might start your internship taking notes or getting coffee, you'll leave with a set of soft and hard skills that are useful to employers. Internships are résumé filler, plus some. They're career-defining experiences that propel you into your future.
- Skills One Can Learn in an Internship
Team members working on solving a business idea. "Knowledge is key" is something that first comes to mind when thinking about the whole subject surrounding internships. Alongside having some basic understanding of what you are wanting to get an internship for, drive and passion for the subject, and also a desire to learn more and gain experience in your desired field are also needed in what employers look for when selecting their candidates. As for getting accepted into a specified program or training, there can be a lot to benefit from. Getting into the field and being accepted as an individual for an internship is a greatly respected opportunity because the company is deciding to take a chance and give their time and expertise to you in order to help you succeed in and grow for your future endeavors. While looking for an internship and applying to selected businesses, there are times when the first opportunity will work out and you will be chosen, other times, it may take a lot of patience and diligence to find the best fit for yourself, and that aligns with your expertise and future goals. There are a lot of skills that can be learned from an experience of an internship while being taught by employees, mentors, and experts on the desired subject. Some of the big skills would include teamwork and cooperation, adaptability, advocating for your work, and the experience of networking. Although there are skills that relate to different fields (doctors won't have the same training and skill sets as a theatre individual or as a meteorologist), we all incorporate these into our daily and professional lives. Teamwork and cooperation are two skills that go hand-in-hand, and although that is a basic skill, working on a project for a class can have a lot higher expectations and requirements in comparison to working with others in the work field. Learning how to work with people you do not know from all areas around the city, state, country, or individuals around the globe. Not only will you work as a team in your respective field, but there is a high chance of working with other members of the company in a different area. Adaptability is another skill that is earned, much like switching to a new school or place of work, you will learn that throughout an internship, being on your A game, changing up how you operate, and changing the way you work. Advocating for oneself and proving to everyone your capability, hard work, and all that you know how to do is a task that is very challenging for a lot of people, especially when starting off new in the workforce. It can be difficult to brag and not come off selfish, but pushing yourself and proving that you are an amazing and confident worker is a great skill and something that, through practice, will be learned in an opportunity such as an internship. The saying "Confidence is Key" is used a lot and is cheesy, yet it is the complete and honest truth. Experience in networking is the last skill and is probably one of the best things that is learned in the whole experience of an internship. Being able to navigate the area of work that you are in can gain connections with people who may help you out in the future, advocate for your work, and also being able to build relationships is key. There are many things to learn and skillsets to gain from being accepted and following through with an internship; however, those four are very valuable things that are learned throughout. - Connecting with Social Media Intern: Kyndra Wonnenberg
Get to know this WINterm! About Me: My name is Kyndra Wonnenberg, and I am from Sioux Falls, SD. Before starting as a 2025 WINterm social media intern for the WIN (Women Into Networking) company, I had recently graduated from the University of Sioux Falls in May of 2025 where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. I majored in Media Studies with a concentration in Social Media Marketing and Event Marketing & Promotions and minored in Marketing. Along with earning my degree, I learned a lot of assets that I am now able to add to my skills. This includes video/photo editing, content creation in a variety of social media platforms, completing a content creation simulator, creating plans for events or products, working with select applications in Adobe Suite/Canva, and different styles of photography/videos. Through my experience and time at the university, I have gained a lot of perspective on the type of work and assignments that I have completed over the past four years whether that is the quality of work, the pace of timing that I need to complete projects, and even to step out of my comfort zone and push myself to the highest standards. When I first started attending my university, I was a Business Administration major so I took a multitude of courses within business and then got involved as a Media Studies major in my 3rd semester and fell in love with the openness and freedom of what I could do. Taking courses for both majors, and marketing courses for my current major, I can say I know both sides of the spectrum. One thing about me is I will always try to go above and beyond with the work that I do. Throughout my life, I have always had a drive and desire for creativity and to do something where I can express myself. However, I am a perfectionist and some people may not take that as a good thing because of timing or being very particular about things, but in my mind, I believe it is good to want to make things look their best with every project or assignment I am working on, this is where the want to produce the highest quality of work comes to play. My Work: If I could, I would spend a lot of time working and finding new ways to express my creativity and try to go outside the box with my material. So far, I have been able to work on a lot of projects. This includes shooting portrait, product, macro, landscape, and long exposure photography. Graphic design is something I have dabbled in by creating ads and short videos. As for videos, I have had the opportunity to interview people in my school or local community and filmed/edited reels and TikToks. I was also given the opportunity to write articles for my university's magazine, The Vessel. Throughout the last couple of weeks of my time at USF, I was asked to be the photographer for the student-led play on campus Orpheus and Eurydice, and got to capture moments of the cast members performing. On the business side of things, I have had the ability to create a hypothetical event putting together vendors, attendees, date/times, payment, etc. I also was able to create an invention for a class in which I went out of the box in comparison to my classmates creating a business idea. I wanted to dive deeper into the issue of food insecurity. I developed a business where people who struggle with this hardship are able to come into a store where donated foods would be available for low prices, pamphlets would be accessible with food recipes, and there would be professionals there to help them and find connections to resources (mental and financial). Within only a short few years I've been able to build my knowledge and I can't wait to see what other things I can achieve. In the meantime, feel free to connect with me and check out my social media and website! - Mixing Creativity and Analysis -- A Data-Driven Artist.
Putting a face to the name. Passion for Analysis Growing up, I always aimed to excel academically and creatively. My priority was to make my parents proud through my academic work. At the same time, I started finding passion in sketching. I was at the top of my class and graduated as valedictorian from middle school. I eventually got accepted into one of DC’s top high schools at the time and continued to excel academically there. During this time, I found out I have a passion for analysis. Being able to solve mathematical problems was one thing, but understanding what these results meant opened up another world for me. I've discovered the value of analysis in business, where I can openly share various ideas. I was born and raised in Washington, D.C., and come from a business-oriented family of immigrants. My father owns a business, and he was inspired by the hard work my grandma put in to sell shoes. My mother supports my dad and helps guide him when making decisions based on the data that is presented. I’ve seen the stress and hard work that come into play when attempting to make a business work. But if there’s one thing that I recently realized, it’s that there are many opportunities that are opened up by business. But many businesses miss out on being known through marketing. SEO Experience Around 2022, I found myself intrigued by the world of digital marketing. In a course that I took, the materials covered ranged from paid advertising to SEO. Initially, I found SEO to be the most intriguing. During my freshman year of college in 2023, I assisted a local gelato caterer in enhancing their SEO by applying the knowledge I had gained. They found the insights I provided to be very valuable, and since then, I have made it a point to enjoy marketing. However, I now find myself wanting to branch out into other kinds of marketing. Overall Goals I find myself intrigued by every marketing concept. Listed below are a couple of my overall goals as an intern: Improve copywriting and paid advertising skills. Learn how AI's revolution has shifted SEO. Get hands-on paid advertising experience. Help business grow through my digital marketing efforts.
