I still remember the first time I met Dr. Nela Jimenez. I was nervous, full of questions, and so unsure of my future. Within seconds, she made me feel welcomed, seen, and capable. We instantly clicked with each other. Today, I want to share how much Dr. Nela has made an impact on my life.
Before I met Dr. Nela, I was not too sure of what I wanted to do after college. I was hyper-focused on book publicity, my dream job. I'm studying communications with a focus in public relations, and I have a love for reading, so it made sense to me. However, I was equipped with tools to succeed at the time. How could I meet all of these requirements entry-level jobs expect of me? I felt very nervous for post-grad before I even began my senior year.
When I finally met Dr. Nela for the first time, she shared her experiences and was very openminded with what I have to say. She opened up my eyes to many different career paths than just publicity or public relations. At the end of my college road, my degree will only say communications. This changed my perspective entirely. She told me about the many different jobs I could have with my communications degree like a journalist, event planner, editor, and more!
Since that first conversation, she continues to be a wonderful mentor and role model in my life. Dr. Nela is practically my personal cheerleader! I have learned a lot, such as:
How to write professionally while keeping a personal touch
Looking at my career path with an open mind and heart
How to navigate connections with others in the workplace and in life
Fast forward to the present, I feel more ready to navigate my career than ever before. I owe everything and more to my wonderful mentor, Dr. Nela Jimenez.
