In an increasingly competitive job market, recent grads and students like me have had to work hard to make ourselves stand out amongst other applicants. One of the most common ways to do this is with an internship! Internships like the WINtern program with Women Into Networking help build highly skilled and capable workers through expanding connections, knowledge, experience, and confidence. Connections An internship is a great way to learn how to build relationships with people in your field and expand your connections. Connections are so important as they can give you a foot in the door to new jobs, experiences, or people to talk to and expand your knowledge and social circle! As a WINtern, I have appreciated the opportunity to build relationships with fellow interns and learn to network with people who already work within the fields I am pursuing. New knowledge Let’s face it - as much as we may like it to be true, school doesn’t always teach us the things we need to know for the job we are looking for. Thankfully, internships can be a fantastic space to learn and apply new concepts in a low-stress environment. In the past 6 weeks, I have gained critical knowledge about marketing strategies and how to successfully apply tools learned in school to real world settings. Experience Internships are also a fantastic way to develop old and new knowledge alike in a space where there is independence to solidify concepts on your own, but a support network to help guide you as needed. Plus, this hands-on experience helps build a portfolio which can be shown off to future employers during the next job search! Many of the assignments we have completed during this internship help us learn when to employ key skills that can be demonstrated to future employers, giving us an edge over the competition. Confidence All the points above lead into my final point: internships develop confidence. With more knowledge, experience, and connections, it is much easier to feel confident in your abilities and aptitude for future jobs. As I have begun to look for a job during the school year and brainstorm positions to apply for once I graduate, I feel much more qualified and confident that I am a competitive applicant for these jobs. This confidence allows me to feel comfortable applying to more jobs and have more success during interviews! I can't wait to gain more knowledge as a WINtern and see how this opportunity helps me succeed in the future. Internships are a crucial part of any student's path through their education. The importance of the internship is widely established. They help build resumes, give applicable experience, and establish young professionals within their field of work. However, these types of experience, while touted as the true value of an internship, are not all that an internship teaches students and aspiring professionals. The value of an internship goes far beyond a resume builder. Experience: Internships offer interns a wide range of experience. An internship often gives interns hands-on experience in the field of their education. They help expand and refine an intern's skillset, provide certifications, and build portfolios that interns can use as they continue on in a certain field. However, the experience an internship provides is more than these niche, field-specific skills. Internships on a general level equip interns with the basic understanding of professionalism required to succeed in a corporate or professional space. The process of finding and internship often teaches young interns how to build a resume, effectively job search, and determine their own qualifications. Once reaching the hiring process, interns are learning, often for the first time, how corporate interviews are conducted, how to communicate successes and weaknesses, and how to pitch themselves to others. Internships are often where young people learn how to exist in a professional space. Connections: In addition to experience, many often overlook what I think is the second biggest learning aspect of an internship: the art of the connection. An internship brings young professionals into a space where they may, possibly for the first time, not know anyone they must work with. Interns learn how to communicate with strangers in a new setting, and they are offered a myriad of opportunities to connect with and learn from those around them. This is also a time that interns learn how to build meaningful and long-lasting connections with others in their field of interest, and this is the first time that connections have the chance to play important roles in the student's future. The internship is an integral part of education. Without it, young professionals would not gain the invaluable experience and connections required to succeed in the professional space!

Listed below are some skills an internship can help you gain. Networking Opportunities: Having an internship can open doors to meeting with new and important individuals. These individuals in the industry can tremendously help facilitate networking and build crucial relationships. Many internships offer mentorship programs for interns which can lead to offering guidance, advice, and help navigate your personal and career goals. Overall, building relationships with professionals and other interns can help create a support system with like-minded people and help to gain job opportunities.  Teamwork: Being in an internship will offer working with other interns in the program. This includes group projects. collaborating with other people who have diverse perspectives and ideas, leads to learning how to work with others and succeeding tasks. Teamwork in internships prepares interns to work successfully in their future career. Critical thinking: Critical thinking is an important skill that interns hone and develop during an internship. An intern fosters this skill by accomplishing and breaking down projects that include complex thinking, collaborating with others, and coming up with solutions for a problem. Critical thinking is ultimately an essential skill to be successful. You gain confidence in analyzing and solving problems.  Confidence: Building confidence is a crucial skill that interns gain. Internships help individuals hone this skill by providing valuable experiences and tasks assigned. Tasks include individual and group  projects. Internships also provide hands-on learning. These will help interns successfully complete assignments which results in interns feeling confident for future tasks. Interns also build confidence throughout their internships by facing critical criticism with tasks and projects. Critical criticism will help them become confident individuals because receiving feedback by supervisors and mentors will help them improve in areas they need to strengthen. Time management: An important skill that interns learn during their internship is time management. Internships teach interns how to develop this skill by having them adhere and work on specific time schedules such as meetings and project deadlines. Having interns work at a specific work schedule makes interns learn how to balance an internship and other important parts in their daily routine. Interns honing this skill sets them up for success in the future. Overall,  Internships are extremely valuable because you gain critical skills that you can apply in your future career.

Everyone knows what it feels like when they begin their journey for their purpose in life. It’s a challenging, brutal journey with the biggest highs and the lowest of lows, but it’s a journey everyone must take at some point in their life. Journeys also show people what they can and can’t handle in life. It points a person in the right direction they were meant to follow. As a newly graduated student from the University of West Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication, I finally completed my first step toward my purpose in life. I’m excited to see where my accomplishment will take me next. The Beginning of My Journey During my time in college, I learned a lot, not just in the scholarly sense but also in personal discovery. I wasn’t sure about what I wanted to study when I was in college. I knew I was interested in writing and helping others reach their goals, but I never had a clear vision of what to do with those interests. I first thought psychology was the path. It involved some of my interests, but I could never find my passion for the study. After researching and talking to my advisor about what other degrees I could consider, I still keep on track to graduation. With some trial and error, I found my footing in mass communication. After a few classes, I loved everything public relations offered. It paired well with all my interests, and I knew I was on the right path.   A Time of Uncertainty During the final years of my college experience, I found myself and the world in uncertain times. In 2020, I was still in school when the shutdown happened. It was hard to keep up with my studies while working part-time and making sure I kept others and myself safe from the virus. I worked hard to keep up with all my comments during that time. I could keep up with my responsibilities at work, but I lost sight of my true path. In that realization, I questioned my priorities, purpose, and myself. At that time, I left part-time jobs to focus entirely on gaining my degree. Making that decision was hard for me, but it was the right one to take for both my mental and physical health.  After quitting my job at the local grocery store and throwing myself back into my studies, I was still a few classes short of graduating on time. Learning that I would have to take a short detour from my path was devastating, but I worked hard to regain my footing and see beyond the uncertainty.   Continuing Down the Path Gaining my degree was one of the best days of my life. I proved to myself and everyone who supported me through the years that I could do anything I put my mind to. Accomplishing this goal was rewarding, but it set a fire in me to start working. After many weeks of interviews and rejections, I decided to look for a paying job that would support me until I found the right internship. While working, I could still look for the right internship to help me find my place in public relations. After months of applying, I finally found and was accepted into an internship that will help me grow my skills while guiding me down my chosen path. Hey everyone! I’m Noelle Cooke, a rising junior at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, working towards a major in business and a minor in creative writing. I’m super excited to be a part of the WINternship program, and eager to make connections while learning all I can about marketing. Being able to work for WIN, a community that spans across many places and people, is amazing, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to put my skills to use in a way that will uplift women in business and their allies. I was particularly drawn to this program because of the variety of skills I will have the chance to learn and utilize, as well as the chance to gain mentorship. I have worked with social media marketing in the past, mainly for a local business called Lighttrends, where I helped to create posts across various platforms, including Tiktok and Pinterest, boosting brand visibility and engagement. My Life at Marist At Marist, I am involved with Games Club and the Marist Orchestra, where I play violin. Some of my favorite classes that I’ve taken include Environmental Economics and Organizational Business. I’m looking forward to my last two years at Marist - it’s hard to believe college is already halfway done. When I first came to college, I had no idea what I wanted to do or what I should major in, but it’s been a fun journey that led me here. I’m looking forward to next semester’s classes, such as Data Modeling for Business and Business & Society. One of my goals before graduation is to join North Road Communications, a student-run IMC firm at Marist. Beyond the Classroom Beyond the classroom, my hobbies include reading, writing, and playing with my adorable four cats. I live and grew up in Darien, Connecticut, and this summer I’ll also be working part time at Whole Foods there. Looking Ahead From creating content for social media to SEO, analytics, or email campaigns, I am eager to learn more about marketing. Hi! My name is Liz Knopp. I am a senior at University of Colorado Boulder, majoring in Psychology with minors in Business and Sociology. When I first began college in 2022, I was planning on pursuing my love of helping others by becoming a therapist. However, through the course of my freshman year, I realized that being a therapist was not the route I wanted to take in order to achieve this goal. During this time, I received an email from my school advertising the Business minor program that includes introductory courses on various realms of business and gives students a chance to apply these skills in a capstone project senior year. I was immediately intrigued and applied to the program as I realized I could apply my skills in the business world to help people. One of the first business classes I took was Principles of Marketing, and I quickly realized that it was a great fit for me, as understanding human behavior is essential to successful marketing decisions. As a budding marketer, I have yet to narrow down exactly which area of marketing I wish to pursue, however, my interests include: Marketing analytics: combining my analytical thinking skills with my knowledge on buyer behavior to understand and address marketing questions and concerns Strategy: advising businesses on the execution and management of marketing campaigns Social media management: using my love for social media to run social media pages for a company I’m currently in my hometown, Colorado Springs, for the summer living with my mom and my brother. I’m really excited to expand my knowledge in marketing this summer as a WINtern and learn more about the ins and outs of different types of marketing strategies and gain experience in these fields. This summer, along with the WINternship, I will be continuing my TA job for a class on Principles of Marketing from this past semester remotely and doing some freelance pet sitting. I also plan on completing a certification in Data Analytics via the Google Career Certificates program. In my free time, I love to be outdoors hiking, hammocking, and paddle boarding. I’m incredibly passionate about music, and spent 3rd-12th grade in an auditioned community choir called the Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale. During this time, I traveled to places like Australia, New York, Hawaii, and New Orleans to sing with choirs from all around the world. While I’m no longer a part of a choir, my passion for music remains and I love finding new music and going to concerts (I've gone to 4 so far this year!). It would be a dream come true to be able to combine my love for the outdoors and/or music into my career once I graduate in 2025.
