My Experience Being a Mentee
Through my internship at Women Into Networking (WIN), I've been assigned a mentor whose name is Manuela Jimenez. Dr. Manuela Jimenez is an accomplished educator, author, and speaker whose mission is rooted in faith, leadership, and service. She's also Dr. World Latina 2025 and represents women who embody strength, intellect, and grace.
I won't lie, it was kind of intimidating at first, being assigned a mentor. I didn't know what to expect from this mentor-mentee relationship.
I was pleasantly surprised to find however that it's been really easy to talk to her. We talk about my progress at university, my career goals, and craft assignments that are suited towards my interests and capabilities.
My first assignment in fact was to write a reflection on my achievements, what I'm doing right now in college, and where I see myself career-wise in the future. This really helped me ponder on how far I've come but also on how far I have to go. Beyond that, I've been researching blog ideas and helping Dr. Nela ideate blog posts for her personal blog. Our next project will be working on her social media accounts and strategizing more ways to expand her audience and following, which I'm really looking forward to.
Overall, would I recommend having a mentor/mentoring someone?
Yes! My personal experience so far has been really positive and I enjoy working with Dr. Nela. Beyond that however, there are multiple reasons why you should consider entering a mentor-mentee relationship.
Mentors can help you:
Develop professionally and personally
Identify and achieve career goals
Increase confidence in your skills
Learn more about your field of interest
