Introduction I am Jasmine Hu and moving to a new country was life changing for me. I’m originally from Italy with a family background from China. At the young age of 14 years old I decided to pursue my studies in the United States, precisely in New York to then move to the West Coast to explore more the beauty and differences of this country. Through the years I had the chance to network with many people with different backgrounds and interests that opened my mind to how vast and diverse the world is. My Passion & Motivation Moving to a new country made Marketing became one of my greatest passions! Not only because it can reach a large audience but because of its power to tell a story and to benefit the community with great insights to improve their lives and raise awareness. Also, the marketing world evolves rapidly, there are always new tools and techniques to learn which offers endless possibilities for growth. Experiencing personal growth is what strives me to work hard and continuously push my boundaries as each challenge I overcome shapes me into a more resilient and capable version of myself. More About Me If you ask one of the closest people in my life to describe me with an adjective, the response would definitely be: a social butterfly! Being around people boost my emotions and energy. - To Be A Student Outside of the Classroom — Ashleigh-Paige McDonald"Treasure your curiosity and nurture your imagination" - Shirley Ann Jackson Hi WIN community! My name is Ashleigh-Paige McDonald. Yes, TWO first names—a dual name for my dual persona, balancing intellect and creativity, discipline and flair. Being a student isn’t limited to classrooms; it’s about applying lessons in every corner of life, and that’s what I’m here to share as I’m beyond ecstatic to introduce myself as a Social Media Marketing Intern through the WINtern Program. Who Am I? I am a 4th-year Echols Scholar at the University of Virginia, graduating this May with a Media Studies major concentrating on sociology. My academic work focuses on how marginalized identities are presented and represented, but my studies have taught me that learning emerges anywhere and thrives in unconventional spaces. For example, my current favorite class is Costume Design—a leap from my formal academic focus—because it challenges my creativity by putting me in a position both unfamiliar and uncomfortable but necessary for my inner child who dreamed of being a fashion designer. Outside the classroom, I’ve embraced an entrepreneurial mindset by identifying and filling gaps in my community. Six years into my loc journey, I’ve turned my love for hair care into LocStar Treatment, a service where I offer more than styling—I provide guidance, confidence, and allyship. Every interaction with my clients becomes an opportunity to exchange knowledge, reminding me that education is both reciprocal and deeply personal. A Few Fun Facts Fashion Lover : I am one to sport an outfit on and off camera! Clothes are essential to how I express myself, and putting together a look feels like crafting art. Fashion has taught me how to be resourceful and creative, showing me that personal expression can be a powerful form of communication. Cooking Enthusiast : Once terrified of cooking, I now find it therapeutic. There’s joy in following a recipe and even more in spicing it up with personal flair. Cooking has taught me patience and adaptability, both of which are crucial when approaching creative problem-solving. Advocate for Mental Health : My academic journey fuels my advocacy for self-care and inclusion. I believe stories—whether told through media, fashion, or conversation—hold transformative power. Sociology has taught me how to use storytelling as a tool for awareness and healing, which I apply when creating content or engaging with communities. Aspirations from a Student As much as I love my studies, I see myself as so much more than my academic path. In the future, I dream of owning a media/marketing firm, pursuing an MBA, and continuing to amplify narratives of marginalized identities. My roles as Brand and Social Media Manager for Reclaimed Hope Initiative and Publicity Intern for the Virginia Film Festival have taught me the importance of applying theory to practice. These experiences reinforced my belief in the power of storytelling and how it can foster meaningful connections. Each of these roles has been an extension of my student mindset, teaching me to value feedback, iterate on ideas, and strive for authenticity. Why WIN? Three words: community, empowerment, and faith. I’ve worked with nonprofits before and loved it, but WIN stands out. The women-oriented and spiritually grounded approach spoke to me immediately. During my first Morning Motivation Clubhouse meeting, I heard gospel music playing, and I almost cried. This is more than professional growth; it’s personal alignment. WIN offers me the chance to continue being a student by applying what I’ve learned while learning from the mentorship and experiences of incredible women who inspire me to grow even further. Let’s Connect! I can’t wait to dive into this journey and connect with each of you! Instagram LinkedIn Facebook: Ashleigh-Paige McDonald With love, Ashleigh-Paige McDonald
- Chelsea Proffitt: Photographer and Writer___________ The Beginning For as long as I can remember I have been creating. Growing up I would go through phases. I made clay sculptures, friendship bracelets, origami, stuffed animals, and probably anything else you can think of. I would choose a craft and spend months perfecting my skills until I decided to try something new. This lasted years. Throughout this time I gained many skills that I use to this day. I can sew, knit, make jewelry, work with wood, paint. The most important skill this time gave me was my creativity. There were no rules to the things I created during this time. I could try out new things, figure out what worked, make mistakes, and understand the visual elements of art and design. As I have gotten older I do not have the same time to commit to these hobbies as I used to but I still create at any opportunity I can. My favorites that have carried on to this day are knitting (and all fiber arts) and stained glass. Why Photography? While most arts and crafts are just hobbies and creative outlets. I know I want to use my creative side in my career. My best friend's mom is a photographer and growing up she encouraged us to photograph everything. This stuck with me and I decided to get a camera in middle school. Since then I have been constantly photographing. It started with silly photoshoots of my dog and quickly progressed to creating works of art to add to my portfolio and share with the world. I am now at Savannah College of Art and Design studying photography and writing. I am still experimenting with my options but my favorite concentration of photography is documentary. I would like to work as a photojournalist or documentary photographer in the future. I enjoy telling stories. I want to use my art to share stories with the world. I believe there is so much beauty that deserves to be shared. I have been given many opportunities during my time in Savannah that have assured me that this is the path I want to follow. Over the summer I was able to travel abroad with a group of fellow students and photographers. We spent two weeks in Argentina; immersing ourselves in the culture and creating a photo series. This time taught me the importance of learning about your subjects. By spending so much time in the culture, my knowledge and love for the country were able to show in my work. The same goes for any documentary piece I create. I also got to collaborate with a small business here in Savannah called Lite Foot Company. I interviewed the owner and spent the day learning about her story. I then created a short documentary film and article. Personal Life While I spend the majority of my time focused on my career and education, I also prioritize my health and well-being. I find it very important to have a good work-life balance. During my hectic work weeks, I make sure to find time to do things for myself. The main way I do this is through running and working out. With my career goals so ambitious, I have found it beneficial to have personal goals to focus on as well. My most recent one has been half-marathons. I also enjoy spending time outside and in nature. I like hiking, snowboarding, and anything else that will allow me to be outdoors. I love animals and have always had pets growing up. I have a golden retriever who is quite literally my best friend. I got her when I was 11 and she has been by my side ever since. She moved with me to college and is with me for the majority of my photo assignments and adventures. Connect With Me I am excited to continue learning more about digital media and see where the future takes me. I know am going to have so many great opportunities to learn, and the WINtern position is no exception. Feel free to connect with me via Instagram and LinkedIn ! I hope to gain useful information and learn from the WIN community.

- Networking and Learning on LinkedinMany people think of Linkedin as just a job board, but it’s a great place for learning and networking too. With over a billion members, Linkedin provides the world’s largest professional network. There are other ways to advance your career beyond clicking apply, and the opportunities for networking and learning on Linkedin shouldn’t be overlooked. Put Your Best Foot Forward It’s important to have your past experiences and accomplishments on your profile, so those you network with and potential employers can see the full picture that a resume can’t always provide. Make sure your profile includes: Your education Your work history Your skills and where you’ve used them Recommendations and awards Publications and projects A headshot for your profile picture Make sure to connect with people you know and expand your network. The bigger your network, the more visible you are on Linkedin. Your connections can also endorse your skills, which helps make your profile stand out and prove you are genuinely skilled to recruiters. Networking on Linkedin Linkedin is a great place to start networking, and there’s more to it than just connecting with a lot of people. For example, after applying to a job, you can send a connection and message the recruiter who posted it. If applicable, Linkedin also shows if alumni from your school work at the company, and they can be a great resource to reach out to when you apply. This helps your resume stand out from the hundreds a large company may get, and part of why it’s important to have your profile filled out. In addition, you can use Linkedin’s alumni search tool to easily find alumni from your school. Learning on Linkedin There’s more than job openings posted across Linkedin–you can follow prominent figures in your industry, or join a Linkedin group to see what people are talking about. You can stay up to date on industry issues and trends while gaining insight from others. Another way to learn is Linkedin Learning. These online courses are free, and cover a wide variety of skills and topics. It’s a great way to grow professionally, and completing them will allow you to display a certificate on your profile. Empower Yourself Linkedin is a valuable tool to empower yourself through learning and networking. Don’t miss out on the opportunities that could be waiting. Whether it’s gaining a new skill or reaching out to an alumni, you never know what might be the moment that changes your career.
- How LinkedIn Can Help Advance Your CareerAs a college student, establishing a developed LinkedIn profile has been encouraged by teachers, recruiters, and fellow students. While LinkedIn may seem like a corporate form of social media, it can be essential in advancing your career for students and established professionals alike. LinkedIn’s platform is versatile, allowing users to use it in whatever way best serves their career goals. A few of the most common tools people utilize for this are establishing new connections, using the job search function, and building a personal brand. Establishing New Connections “Connections are key” is a phrase all college students know, especially those in business. Formerly, connections were in-person relationships built with those around you, such as family, teachers, coaches, bosses, and co-workers. Now, LinkedIn allows users to make connections with people worldwide. Growing relationships with a wider net of individuals can help open up new job opportunities that otherwise may have been out of reach. Additionally, as you develop your connections, you can easily connect with your connection’s connections, which can help increase the number of future opportunities available to you. Using the Job Search Function One of the ways I use LinkedIn the most is by using the job search feature. LinkedIn’s built-in job search functions similarly to other popular job search platforms like Indeed. However, it’s integration into the LinkedIn platform serves several benefits. Company pages are automatically linked to their job postings, making it easier to research a company and learn what they are about. Additionally, this feature allows you to see people who work for this company, who may even have gone to the same College as you, making it easy to establish connections within the company. Taking advantage of this can give you an opportunity for referral from the connections you establish and increase your knowledge about the company, which can increase your chances of successfully landing a job. Additionally, depending on the type of application, this feature allows hiring managers to view your LinkedIn profile as well, which can help establish a better feel for who you are as a candidate than the typical resume would. Building a Personal Brand As with all social media, LinkedIn is an excellent opportunity to show more of your personality than a resume offers. Utilizing the biography section is an easy way to share your passions and more in-depth work experience with your following and potential companies who may look at your profile. Additionally, the ability to publish articles and other posts can provide examples of your writing style and show off personal interests you may choose to cover. Building a personal brand is essential as it helps employers learn more about you, or if you decide to run your own business, it gives an easy way for potential clients to learn more about you quickly. These social features are a great way to set yourself apart from others in your career path. LinkedIn is invaluable for college students and professionals seeking a successful career. Users can create a solid online presence highlighting their professional achievements and unique qualities. Additionally, LinkedIn is invaluable for fostering new connections, finding job opportunities, and building a personal brand . LinkedIn allows users to tap into a global network, gain insights into potential employers and companies, and differentiate themselves in a competitive job market. Whether seeking job opportunities, expanding your professional network, or establishing a personal brand, LinkedIn provides essential resources to help shape and advance your career.
- Empowering Women Entrepreneurs to Thrive & Lead…Key challenges Women Entrepreneurs face 1. Access to Funding Women-owned businesses receive only 2.3% of venture capital funding, despite owning nearly 40% of small businesses. Women, particularly women of color, face bias in funding processes and are often seen as “high risk” investments, leading to limited growth and scalability opportunities. 2. Limited Networks Entrepreneurship thrives on relationships, but women often have fewer networks than their male counterparts. This lack of connection to business mentors, investors, and other key stakeholders can significantly impact their growth potential and access to opportunities. 3. Gender Bias & Societal Expectations Female entrepreneurs often juggle the double burden of business ownership and societal expectations. They are more likely to encounter bias in decision-making roles, limiting their ability to access leadership positions and influential spaces. 4. Skill Development & Mentorship: Without proper mentorship and business development training, many women face difficulty scaling their businesses and sustaining long-term success. Gaps in digital skills, financial literacy, and business strategy often lead to burnout and stagnation. Your donation will: Support business coaching and development programs designed for women and diverse entrepreneurs. Fund networking events and workshops that connect women with vital resources and expert mentorship. Foster inclusive spaces where women-owned businesses can thrive and build sustainable success. WIN Projects | WIN Programs | Join WIN | Become a Volunteer The Challenge: Gaps Women Entrepreneurs Face Despite progress, women continue to face significant gaps in entrepreneurship. Statistics on entrepreneurs who quit their businesses due to life challenges such as family deaths, loss of income, caregiving, or relationship breakdowns show distinct gender disparities. Women are more likely than men to close their businesses for these reasons, as they often bear a greater caregiving burden. Women face a higher risk of business closures related to caregiving for elderly family members or due to the emotional toll of divorce or family loss. Additionally, 54% of women entrepreneurs cite caregiving as a primary reason for stepping away from their businesses compared to 36% of men ( Women in Family Business ). This shows the significant impact of personal life events on women’s entrepreneurial sustainability. Women disproportionately bear caregiving duties, especially for elderly relatives, which often leads to them leaving the workforce or scaling back their businesses. In a 2019 study, 13% of women entrepreneurs reported quitting their businesses due to caregiving responsibilities, compared to just 3% of male entrepreneurs. This trend is consistent with the broader pattern where women are more likely to take on caregiving roles, impacting their business continuity ( NWBC ). Female entrepreneurs are more likely to experience greater financial and administrative burdens after the death of a spouse. For instance, widowed women often face challenges that affect their ability to manage or continue their businesses. These include increased vulnerability to financial instability, administrative overload, and difficulty adjusting to life post-bereavement ( BioMed Central .) Divorces disproportionately affect women’s entrepreneurial ventures. Research suggests that women are more likely than men to experience financial setbacks after a breakup or divorce, leading to a 30% higher likelihood of closing their businesses due to loss of shared income and time constraints related to single parenting ( NWBC )( BioMed Central ). Women-owned businesses are more vulnerable to financial crises due to systemic inequalities like lower access to capital and income disparities. Loss of household income due to events such as a partner’s job loss or personal financial hardship leads to 23% of women entrepreneurs citing financial strain as a reason for exiting their businesses, compared to 14% of men. This is often exacerbated by lower cash reserves and access to external funding ( BioMed Central )( NWBC ). Here is a scenario this 12 month program would support… Person: A Woman who is starting or running a Business, experiencing a crisis such as Domestic Violence, Divorce/Breakup, Death in the Family, and in need for emotional healing at their lowest point. Jasmine's Struggle Jasmine had always dreamed of owning her own bakery. After years of working long hours in corporate jobs, she finally took the leap to start “Sweet Serenity,” a small bakery in her hometown. With her culinary skills and passion for baking, she envisioned creating a warm space where people could gather, enjoy delicious treats, and celebrate special moments. Just as her bakery began to gain traction, tragedy struck. Jasmine's beloved mother, her biggest supporter and source of inspiration, passed away unexpectedly. The loss shattered her emotionally, leaving her heartbroken and struggling to cope. To make matters worse, the financial burden of funeral expenses and a sudden decline in foot traffic due to local events being canceled pushed her to the brink of financial ruin. As weeks went by, Jasmine found herself overwhelmed by grief. The once vibrant bakery felt empty without her mother’s laughter echoing through the walls. She struggled to keep up with orders and even neglected basic tasks like restocking supplies and maintaining cleanliness in the shop. Each day, she fought against the temptation to close the doors for good, feeling like she was letting down her mother’s memory. Jasmine’s income dwindled as she fought to keep the bakery afloat, and the weight of her responsibilities became increasingly heavy. The bills piled up, and her savings dwindled to nothing. She felt alone, doubting her ability to overcome the loss while also managing a business. The stress left her sleepless at night, spiraling into anxiety about her future and the dream she had worked so hard to achieve. Friends and family urged her to take a break, but Jasmine couldn’t bear the thought of abandoning her bakery, a testament to her mother’s love and support. Feeling lost and at her lowest point, she began to question her worth as a business owner and whether she had the strength to continue. The joy of baking was overshadowed by the grief that consumed her, leaving her in a dark place with no clear path forward. Desperate for support, Jasmine contemplated seeking help but felt embarrassed to admit her struggles. She feared that reaching out would signify defeat, not understanding that seeking assistance could be the first step toward healing and regaining control over her life and business. The WIN GA Gives Campaign is designed to support women like Jasmine, who find themselves at a crossroads in their personal and professional lives due to overwhelming crises, such as the loss of a loved one or a decline in income. By providing personalized mentorship, the campaign connects Jasmine with seasoned mentors who understand her challenges and can offer emotional support while giving practical advice on managing her bakery during this tumultuous time. Additionally, the campaign connects participants to crucial funding sources, including grants and small business loans, which would alleviate the immediate pressure of mounting bills and allow Jasmine to reinvest in her bakery, giving her the breathing room she needs to focus on healing. The campaign fosters a supportive community of women who understand the unique challenges faced by female entrepreneurs, enabling Jasmine to connect with others who have experienced loss, thereby reducing her sense of isolation. Networking opportunities, both in-person and online, allow her to build relationships with fellow business owners and potential clients, facilitating collaborative efforts and increased visibility for her bakery. Access to educational resources focused on business planning and marketing would empower Jasmine to attract more customers and revitalize her customer base through targeted marketing campaigns. Furthermore, the campaign provides guidance on navigating the often-complex process of applying for grants and securing alternative funding sources, empowering Jasmine to take actionable steps toward financial stability. Training on leveraging technology and artificial intelligence would enable her to streamline operations, manage her time effectively, and enhance customer engagement. Continuous brand exposure through WIN’s platforms would help Jasmine attract new customers and build a loyal client base, ultimately aiding her recovery from the downturn caused by her personal crisis. With ongoing access to experienced WIN consultants, Jasmine would receive personalized guidance tailored to her unique situation, ensuring she feels supported and informed as she navigates challenges. In summary, the WIN GA Gives Campaign offers Jasmine a comprehensive support system to navigate her grief while rebuilding her business. By providing mentorship, funding resources, community connections, and essential business education, the campaign empowers her to transform her pain into a source of strength and inspiration, ultimately honoring her mother’s memory by creating a thriving bakery that reflects her passion and resilience.
